Theories Applied to Our Own Made Up Flim

Plot - A new girl has arrived to a new school in West-London. However, who ever she associates her self with is killed. After a number of deaths fingers are pointed towards her. But the questions is is she really innocent? is she the reason for the killings? or has her past haunted her?

The theory applied to this story would be Todorov's. As at the start there would be an equilibrium. The equilibrium would be of everything being perfect no deaths, everyone happy and the main charter fitting in and getting to know people around the school. The disequilibrium is that there are many killing associated with the people that girl knows. Therefore, many people are doubting her and saying she the killer. The new equilibrium would be of her proving her innocents. There would be a re-insurance within the audience of peace being restored and order.

In addition, Propps theory would apply to this as well. The hero would be the girl who our main character is. There wouldn't be a villain that is obvious however, a false hero whom appears to be good but is secretly behind all the killings. Last of all their would be an helper that supports the main character throughout all the killings taking.

Last of all Barthes theory of enigma codes will be used aswell. We would start of with our main character being introduced e.g. getting ready in morning for first day of school etc. This would allow our audience to easily identify that this is our main protagonist then slowly introduce other charcters within the narrative.

Sound Presentation - Mozart

Sirs Evaluation Of My Presentation

WWW
  • Great choice of music. Different and good justification too
  • Parallel images fit perfectly.
  • Interesting class element to it - Royals, estates etc
EBI -
  • Design of Slide
  • Colour could of been added
My Evaluation

Overall I believe that my presentation was good. The parallel and contrapuntal images went well together. However, I do agree with sir. I could of taken my time in creating the presentation and designed it better compared to how it is currently. In addition, I could of used colour in the background of the presentation to convey messages e.g dark grey - dull negative colour, purple - associated with class, royalty etc..

Theories Applied To Film Trailers - Fast & Furious 6

We are introduced to the protagonist in the opening scene. They discuss a plot that interests the main protagonist. Once a picture is shown of a female character his interest grows more. Then we are introduces to all the other protagonists at the same time in different frame shots.
Action codes that are used in this trailer is towards the start where it's a high jacking of a military car.
This raises questions to the audience. They perhaps ask themselves who are these people?, why are they high-jacking the military, what do the military have of their interest?. This creates interest and draws in the audience more to the story.

In this trailer we are introduced to multiple characters. This could indicate that it has a multi strand narrative. The characters displayed indicates that they are doing that job for the same reason however, they are all getting something different out of it.

In the trailer we are introduced to Todorovs theory. We see at the start an equilibrium where everything is calm and there is no violence or any problems. However, that quickly ends as we see one character approaching with a quest. After those events take place it becomes louder and more hectic. We see explosions and a series of clashes between the protagonists and the antagonist through out.

We are also introduced to Propps theory as well The seven spheres of Characters. We are able to identify the villains in this trailer as they are the first set of characters to be in action when gun shots are fired. The donor is at the start who shows a picture to the protagonist. This indicates that the female character is of interest and is to be saved by the protagonist. The helpers are introduced when they are talking about the quest that will take place. Because there are several protagonists we can say that they all play a significant part to restore order. However, the main protagonist is Vin Diesel who has a main interest of the female in the photo.

FIlm Noir - Lighting and Its Effects - The Big Sleep Trailer Analysis

The trailer starts off with two characters. One is a woman who seems to be a librarian the other is an detective. The detective give away half the story line as we know there will be a murder later on where he would have to investigate. The hat and mac coat gives away the identity of that specific character. These clothing items are commonly associated with film noir due to the fact it's mostly based on American crime dramas.

In one scene the detective breaks into a house and comes across a dead body. In that scene low key lighting is used. The low key lighting links with the dead body as it creates a mystery about who's killed that person. This raises questions to the audience about why that person perhaps was killed?, who's the killer?, why was he targeted? etc.
In another scene the female character is bent down to the ground looking at something then quickly looks out the door to see if anyone is looking. This also raises question within the audience and suspicion about this character. The facial expersions of her suggest she perhaps is up to no good.

Film Noir - Lighting And Its Affects

Film Noir Distinctive Style

Film Noir is associated with Hollywood crime movies in the early 40's to the 50's. Film Noir is most commonly know for using low-key lighting. The low-key lighting emphasises a mysterious, dangerous environment. This links with the American crime drama that Film Noir is associated with. The shadowy environment Film Noir creates links with mystery. The overall feeling creates a eerie environment in all Film Noir movies. The term 'Noir' comes from the French which means black. It just means black film.
The American adopted the style from the French and used it for their famous crime drama's.

Picture Analysis

This photography has been taken at a low angle shot. It uses low key lighting which is commonly associated with film noir. The low key lighting focus on the hand of the subject. The hand and the gun play a significant part in this photo. The fact that the gun is of more focus suggest that their is violence to follow. Furthermore, the low angle shot suggests that the person whom the subject is pointing the gun to has less power compared to our subject. The subject has more dominance over that person.

In this photo the subject's face is not visible. This gives a sense of mystery which is commonly associated with film noir. In addition, the background seems very foggy. Fog is one of the key conventions of film noir.

Dominate, Negotiated & Oppositional Reading/ Halls Theory

Halls Theory

Stuart Hall had a theory of encoding and decoding. His theory suggests that T.V programmes and other media have messages within it. The message can be interpreted in three different ways. This all depends on who's viewing the media displayed. Each and every person will have different interpretations of the media displayed. This depends on that specific persons cultural background, economic standing and personal experiences

Hall states that there is three ways of decoding. One is the dominate reading this is what the creator of the media displayed intends. The other is the negotiated reading which is a middle group. This argues for and against the media displayed. The last on is the oppositional reading. This is an alternative reading that goes against the creators intentions.

HoodiesDominate Reading - The dominate reading of this specific picture is a negative reading. The fact that these two subjects are wearing their hoods up indicates that they could be causing trouble. Furthermore, by having their hoods up they're hiding their identity. This could convey that they're already in some sort of criminal activities. The hood can also represent that these two subjects are teenagers. As teenagers are most commonly known to be wearing their hoods up. Furthermore, the fact that they're are wearing all black attire could perhaps mean they're of bad characters. As black conveys darkness, evil, danger etc.

Negotiated Reading - The negotiated reading of this picture could be of that these two subjects are just walking home from going out with their mate. The hoods up can indicated that they probably felt cold or it rained during their journey back home. However, the other reading of this could perhaps be that more teens are involved with violence on the streets.

Oppositional Reading - The oppositional reading of this picture could be that two friends are walking home from playing football in the park with their mates. The fact that they're wearing their hoods up could just be because they either feel cold or it was raining previously. Furthermore, the fact that both of them are wearing similar clothing backs up that they could of been at the park playing football.

The Game Plan: Want a Soda - Mise-en-Scene Analysis - Clip 3

The Game plan stars Dwayne the Rock Johnson more commonly known as The Rock. In this movie he plays a famous American Football quarterback however, one day he is faced with a problem when his daughter shows up on his door step one day. Whom he has no clue about.

The costumes of the characters are causal. They're all in the main characters apartment watching a basketball game. We're able to tell that they're all wealthy as house it's set in looks very stylish. The way we're able to tell they all are wealthy is because the person who owns this apartment (the main character) wouldn't be friends with people of a lower class. Also the fact that one of his friends is wearing a designer watch implies that they're wealthy.

In addition, at one point The Rock is telling off one of his mates. This suggest that this character is proudy. As his friend didn't do anything wrong for him to be told off for.

We're able to tell that these character's are humorous as on of the friends shake a can of soda to prank his friend. However, the other friend switches it and reverse the prank. This show that this is a comedy genre movie. Furthermore, there's a little girl colouring in towards the start this suggest that it's a family movie. As there's a child playing a part within the movie.

The lighting of this apartment seem natural. This shows off the features of the apartment the huge and luxurious size of it. Furthermore, the natural lighting could also link with it being a family genre movie.

A Good Day To Die hard: Ballroom Clip - Mise-en-Scene Analysis - Clip 2

A Good Day To Die Hard is the fifth instalment of the Die Hard series starring Bruce Willis. The costumes of the characters in this clip are casual and formal. We're able to identify the antagonist who are in the suits and the protagonists who are dressed causally. The antagonists are smartly dressed this suggest that they're organised in what tasks they're going to do. In this case it's to kill the two protagonists. Furthermore, it suggest that they're wealthy or work for some one who's very wealthy due to the clothes they're wearing.
The Make-up used in this clip is blood. The blood symbolises violence in the movie and there's more to come.

The lighting used in this specific clip is very natural. It makes the movie more realistic and the audience will be more engaged with the film. This enhances the action sequences with in this clip as well including other actions sequences throughout the movie. The colours are mostly dull in this clip which suggest some sort of tension and seriousness within the movie.

This scene takes place in a ballroom. There's conflict within the setting as a ballroom is meant to be a elegant, peaceful and clam place however, in this clip it's shown to be a brawl room for the characters. Props used in this clip are guns and knifes. These weapons represents violence throughout the movie and violence to yet come. The close up shot of the knife suggests it's a sneaky way of getting out of threatening situations.

In this clip the antagonists look more tense compared to the protagonists. This could be because the protagonists are more of a threat therefore, they have twice as many men there so they're more safe. The Protagonists look more relaxed. There attitude to this situations is like they've been through it all before. Also the looks that they both exchange to each other when they're tide up is humorous. They smile at each other because they know they are able to cause more damage compared to the antagonists.

Cars 2: Air Mater - Mise-en-Scene Analysis - Clip 1

Air Mater is a short animated Pixar movie. In this animated clip we are introduced to one of the characters Mater. Mater is a old, dusty, broken down tow truck. He is shown to be very scruffy. Furthermore, the buck teeth implies his character is dopey and has Hill-Billie characteristics. In addition, the character Mater his body work of the car is not looked after well. This suggest that this character looks after other rather than himself. We can see this in action at 0:07 when he's helping a broken down car.

The lighting of this clip is bright. The brightness of this clip suggest it's targeted towards a younger audience from the age 5+. Furthermore, it's animated which gives away that this is targeted to a younger audience. The bright lighting gives a happy and joyful mood to the clip. The lighting and the colours connect. The colours are of bright clean colours such as white, yellow, red etc. This sets a friendly mood to the environment and suggests it's predominately targeted towards a younger audience.

The setting of this clip is in American county side. We are able to gather this as there are clear roads. Where as in a busy town there would be multiple cars around the area. Furthermore, everything is more spaced out compared to a town. The rocky scenery in the background also supports the fact that this is an American countryside.

Mise-en-Scene - Gravity the Movie Analysis

Mise-en-scene – Gravity
Gravity is a movie yet to release on the 4th October 2013. It stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. The movie is a Sci-Fi drama where a medical engineer and astronaut work together to survive outer space after an incident has taken place on their space station.

The character shown on the main poster is in a space suit which suggests it’s a sci-fi movie. From the space suit we can gather that this person is most likely to be very intelligence and knowledgeable. Due to the fact that they’re in space. Also we can say that this individual is brave as there are many precautions and dangers to travel to space. This links with the poster it’s self as we can tell this character is in danger. As they’re not in a space station or around people they’re just floating in space.

The lighting is targeted mainly towards the middle. This shows earth and the character. Including wires and a small fraction of the space station towards the corner on the right. The lighting represents that earth is the only way for the character to proceed. Furthermore, the lighting on earth suggests that earth is this character only hope to survive. However, our character is being pulled back into the darkness of outer space. In addition, the left hand side of the poster is darker. This implies that more you go into the dark the less chance you have of survival.

The lighting and the colours match. The colour scheme is darker however; there are parts which are light. The darker parts represent the tension of the movie. We can tell this movie generates a lot of tension due to the fact that an astronaut is exposed to outer space with no safety. Furthermore, the astronaut is drifting away from earth.

The setting of this poster is outer space. This suggests this movie is based around the Sci-Fi genre including thriller. We can gather this information by the fact that there is an astronaut drifting away from space. Furthermore, the dark colours in the poster indicate that this movie has a serious tone as dark colours are associated with seriousness. This gives the impression this movie is also of a thriller genre.

The props used in this image are wires and small parts of metal blurred out. The blurred out effect gives us the impression that these small bits are travelling at a rapid speed. This suggests that it’s difficult to have control of your-self in space. In addition, this implies that it would be very chaotic during the movie.

In addition, it seems to be that Beckham has more of the attention compared to his aftershave as his photography is more eye catching compared to his aftershave bottle towards the left.

Furthermore, the medium shot allows us to view his hair, beard styling and suit. This shows us that he is a classy man due to his styling in this specific photo.

Subject Matter -  The subject of the photography is David Beckham who's a world class English footballer. The fact that David Beckham's picture is larger compared to his aftershave suggest he is a brand himself. Setting - The photography was taken indoor as mostly during the evening people attend indoor parties, conferences e.t.c.

Film Trailer - The Mortal Instruments City Of Bones -` Analysis

The Mortal Instruments - City Of Bones
Genre - Action/Thriller/Fantasy

Trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc4CiTvQ-YE

The Mortal Instruments is a movie based on a book series. It stars Lilly Collins, Campbell and Robert Sheehan including many more. In the trailer we can see that this movies genre varies from action, fantasy and thriller.

The action side of the trailer to The Mortal Instruments is at the start. At the start in side the nightclub we witness a young adult with a Gothic appearance, who's a shadow hunter killing a man who's secretly a demon. With action genre movies there is some sort of killing or violence shown. Furthermore, in another part of the trailer that indicates that this is a action movie is at 52seconds where there is a massive show case of weapons. The weapons indicate that their will be some form of violence during the movie. In addition, at the start again in the nightclub. The shadow hunter (Gothic looking young adult) shows off his blade. This suggests that his blade plays a significant part in the movie. This backs up the action side of the movie as well suggesting violence.

The fantasy side of The Mortal Instruments is at the start when one of the characters says "Everything you've heard about monster and nightmares, legends whispered around camp fires. All the stories are true". This suggests to us that there's a magical side to it, a fictional side to it. In addition, after the killing in the nightclub the protagonist can see the shadow hunter while in a coffee shop. Then he suddenly disappears. This backs up the fantasy side of the movie as most fantasy genre trailers have some sort of magic in it. That will show their audience what certain characters in the movie are able to do. It's like dropping hints to them about what magic is going to take place in the film.

Last of all the thriller side of The Mortal Instruments. Through out we have a sense that this movie has great tension. The battle of good and evil always has obstacles that the protagonist must over come in order to be successful towards the end. At one part in the trailer the characters are talking amongst themselves one says "she's going to get us all killed" this also builds the tension as the main character has got something to prove to all the others and clear all the doubt that the others have.

Why I Chose AS Media Studies

I chose AS Media studies as I have previously studied it at GCSE. At GCSE I got a grade A for my coursework and a C for my exam which overall was a B. As I studied Media at GCSE I realised how much I really enjoyed this subject therefore, I thought it was best for me to carry on the subject to A-levels. In addition, my sister who also studied GCSE Media and AS Media Studies suggested it was a good subject for me to take. This year I'm going to be studying Applied Business and Media Studies which will help me forward on to my university course which is marketing. One thing I mostly like about media is the practical tasks as this allows me to be creative. Furthermore, media allows us to think for our self as in seeing something from different views and not being manipulated by the press.

Over this year of AS Media Studies I’d like to develop my analysing skills as I'm slightly weak on that specific area. Also Media will help me be more organized with the work load and getting everything done as soon as possible and not leaving work last minute. I’d also like to learn the techniques on how the media press manipulates their audience and not letting them think for themselves. But agreeing with them and not bothering trying to see the other sides of the story.
