Exam Questions

2.) How is gender/ethnicity/ age represented in the music video?

During the duration of the clip we witness a large numbers of teenagers/adults causing mayhem. We prominently see males in the video and less females. This indicates that males are more dominate and violent compared to women therefore, living up to the stereotype normally presented within the media.  Furthermore, there are predominantly black males within the music video which is again stereotypical of the media to represent. They represent black males to be apart of crime and extremely violent, not obeying the law however, creating their own and following the pathway they find the easiest to get into.  In addition, we also witness more younger teens in the video suggesting that teens follow the pathway of crime at a young age especially those who live at council estates. Furthermore, we also witness a few adults within the video. Therefore, suggesting the teens at the council estates look up to them and want to follow the path that they haven taken. This also links with the hypodermic theory where consumers are injected with the image of Teens being violent. This allows the audience to be powerless due to the fact they are being injected with the image of teens acting in a certain way and contributing to it.

3.)  Media Institutions: In what ways is the video typical of music videos and what values does it promote?

The music video is presented as a montage. It has clips from the riots it's self and clips that were filmed. By having genuine clips from the riots it gives a sense of authenticity and realism. The values it promotes is violence and anger. With out listening to the lyrics deeply most viewers will believe this song is made purely to back up the actions that teens and adults had taken out on the day of the 2011 London riots. However, the deeper meaning of the actual lyric is saying something else how 'Chavs' are neglected in society and not given enough support. We witness fast cuts and a fast pace of editing which contributes to the music video  being violent and loud. This enforces the image and characteristics of a council estate predominantly shown.

4.) Media Audiences: Who does this text/artist appeal to and why?

I belief that the music video generally appeals to teenagers however, the deep lyrical meaning is for everyone to listen to. As mentioned before the video predominantly appeals to teenagers however, it also gives a message to those in authority. We witness Plan B to be a voice for the voiceless, in this case a voice for those who are labelled as chavs. In the behind the scenes for the making of ill manors one of the characters ED talked about how the movie overall is for two sets of audiences. One of whom didn't riot and the other who did riot during summer 2011. In this case we are able to establish this is the case too. Plan B has directly addressed authority due to the fact that he finds it that they are out classing those living on council estates and not allowing them to be a part of society. Generally the artist appeals to more teenagers as they see him talking 'truth' during some of the tracks he has made over the past few years. The duration of the video clip is more targeted towards a demographic group of D. This will appeal to them as it links with council estate semi skilled/ unskilled workers and a demographic set of E which are unemployed and students which links largely with his gathering.

ILL Manors: TEDx Lecture

1.)
Ben Drew who is more commonly known as Plan B talks about politics and those in charge to be negative. During his lecture he had mentioned how he didn't have respect for authority. Therefore, suggesting he still may not but not the extent he may have previously. We witness Plan B talking about society how they've labeled a particular set of people in society as 'Chavs' and how this is morally wrong to label people that dress a type of way and talk in a different sense. We typically label individuals like that due to the fact in the way they appear furthermore, Plan B talks on about how it's all they know because they're uneducated about the morals of society in a sense. Plan B directly targets society as a whole due to the fact we've dis classed those who live on council estates to under us. Therefore, making them feel as if they haven't got a future like us who are classed to be more privileged.

2.)
Personally I believe that the target audience specifically for the TEDx lecture is for those who are like Ben Drew, those who are classed as chavs and those who aren't. First of all those who are classed as chavs will agree with the points raised in the lecture due to the fact that they see Plan B as themselves. They see him as a voice for themselves. The other target audience is those who are seen to be privileged. Which is similar to the way that one of the characters from the movie Ill manors Ed talked about the riots. He said it was a two way target audience one for those who didn't riot and to those that did. The reason it's also targeted to those who didn't riot is because they see the hardships and they way individuals as such are neglected in society. Therefore, in this case the target audience will the the same as previously mentioned. Predominately the target audience for this music videos are those classed as chavs therefore, it's likely it's targets to them as they see Plan B as a voice for them. A voice for the unheard.

3.)
Plan B had talked about the media in the TEDx lecture. He signified how the media are the route of the problem how they don't allow us as an audience think for our selves.  For instance, the example he had given about how the media doesn't allow us to think for our selves however, allows us to stereotype people and see them as a certain group of individuals that are the same. The media classes 'Chavs' to be folk devils as they challenge the morals of society and shows a more alternative view to England as a whole compared to the way they are represented globally in the media. The reason for this is because the British media feel ashamed of chavs and the characteristics they have. In addition, it challenges the dominate representation portrayed by the media for Britain to be shown superior compared to other countries and to still have the power they had years ago.

Ill Manors: the making of

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?
The intention Plan B had when producing this movie was to show the audience a different representation of the youth of London. Ben Drew had set out to show a more negative, gritty  representation of London rather that the way most movies glamorise it. Ben Drew wanted to challenge the stereotype of teens and show the hardship reality of it. During the duration of the clip we viewed we witness the actors of the movie and the movie director being interviewed. The actors of the movie are more formal compared to the director. Whereas, the director Ben Drew's characteristics are more like the way the characters are conveyed in the movie. Therefore, suggesting that Ben Drew has a emotional connection with the movie as it's a part of him.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?
During the production process of Ill manors places where they filmed for instance, 'Crack Den' was actually a crack den. This shows us that the movie is real as it gets. Furthermore, the production process of the movie first started well before 2012. Ben Drew directed a short movie clip where he rapped and the clip showed what he was rapping about. Then he was told by one of his friends to make something again similar like that however, at a longer duration. We are able to see this in tact during the movie as each character has their own track dedicated to their background and what has currently happened in their life. Moreover, the budget of the film is relatively low therefore, it makes the film more authentic. As there are a few non professional actors it makes it more authentic and genuine.

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?
One of the characters in the movie 'Ed' talked about how it can be targeted to not to those who rioted however, to those who didn't but sat at home and judged them. It will be targeted towards a more middle class individuals to show what leads the youth to carry out certain actions which are shown in the movie. In addition, it is in a sense targeted to a disposed individuals. As they will have a emotional connection with the character in the movie and they can see themselves conveyed in that way.

4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve? Explain your answer with reference to both the film and the making of documentary.
I believe that the film does successfully do what the director Ben Drew set out to do. After the movie ended I was quite shocked about the movie in general as it gave off a depressing feeling. In addition, some scenes were quite hard hitting and made you generally think of what it would be like if you were to live in a area as such. In the documentary we are shown the behind the scenes of the movie. During the behind the scenes characters talk about how real it really is indicating that it's not drummed up or glamorised in the way London is normally shown. However, it's more realistic to a sense.

ill Manors Trailer Review

The typical key codes of movie trailers :

  • Production logo
  • Distribution logo
  • Plot summary
  • Voice over
  • Cast/credit/studio/ information
  • Title of the movie
  • Stars shown often
We are able to identify these seven key features in the ill Manors trailers. We are shown the cast of ill Manors multiple time through out the trailer. This allows the audience to be familiar with the casting of the movie and identify the prognostic and antagonist of the story. The title of the movie is shown towards the end of the movie. However, a voice over isn't commonly used in films like previously in the early 2000's where they were largely common among trailers. We are also shown the production logo which is 'Enterprises' and the distribution logo is more shown seconds before that. We are given a small fraction of the plot during the trailer. We as the audience can make out a brief understanding of what characters are the most important and the ones that are the least. We are presented with the studio information towards the end of the trailer of ill manors. Furthermore, we are presented with a voice over however, it's taken from the movie and edited into the trailer clip.

I would primarily say that the target audience for ill manors is 15 -35 year olds. The reason for this is because many teens in the UK find UK crime/gang culture interesting in the way they are presented. Even though this movie has a certificate of 18 it will still gain young viewers.  One unique selling point of the movie is that there is a soundtrack introducing the characters, the environment  and the back story of the characters. In addition, as the audience are already familiar with the the Director "Plan B"  this allows his fans from his musical career to now follow his movie career as a directors. The genre of the film is a thriller, drama. The environment it's been filmed in is fairly run down. We are shown houses that can't be called genuine houses due to the fact that it's completely demolished. In addition, the facial expression of the characters throughout the trailer are serious therefore, contributing to genre of thriller.

Frozen Planet Exam

Grade: C-

WWW - Good, detailed, referencing of the text

EBI - Talk more about audience theory/ terminology in Q4

LR - Overall I did relatively well through out the exam. I gave good detail of institutions, forms, representation and audience in the text. However, I slipped one one of the questions which was about audience. I needed to talk more about audience theory in great detail.

Q4.) Media Audiences

Through out the duration of the clip we are informed, educated and entertained in the programme. These are the three main purposes of The BBC for each programme they broadcast. We are presented with an enigma code during the duration of the clip. The enigma code presented varies in two different story lines. Firstly, we are introduced to one of the camera crew members struggling to get the 'perfect' shot of 'Antarctica famous belly flop'. The second is of when one member of the camera crew dives into 'Earth's coldest water'. As the audience we begin to think whether the crew member will make it out alive due to the fact that their is only one life line of getting in and out of the water. In addition, they have low supplies which adds a greater risk factor. By showing a behind the scene footage it informs/educates the audience. The way it educates the audience is that we witness the hardships of recording in sub zero temperatures. furthermore, this also educates us and also educates us in the aspect that the difficulties faced when filming.

Ill Manors Review

Ill Manors Review
The movie Ill manors is about four main characters which are all drug dealers and one user and two prostitutes. Two of the drug dealers Ed and Aaron are mates that have grown up together and the other two know each other relatively well. The movie is surrounds it’s self around the struggles and hard ship of growing up and living in ‘run down’ areas as such.

Ill manors is a movie directed by Ben Drew or most commonly known as his stage rap name ‘Plan B’. So far Ben drew has only directed one movie which is Ill Manors. However, he has provided soundtracks to many TV series such as Eastenders, Shameless, and Celebrity Big Brother etc. As Ben Drew who is more commonly known as Plan B took a new step into the filming Ill manors demonstrated that he’s a gifted individual as ill manors was nominated for three awards and one of which he won. It was nominated in 2012 for the British Independent Film Awards and again in 2012 it won the Dinard British Film Festival. In 2013 it was nominated in the London Critics Circle Film Awards.

Ill manors had a large cast and crew that contributed to the success of the movie the main stars of the movie were Riz Ahmed, Ed Skrein, Natalie Press, Anouska Mond, Nick Sagar and many more. The audience may be familiar with certain cast members in the film for instance; Riz Ahmed who plays Aaron has acted in movies such as four lions. In Four lions we witness a different side to Riz Ahmeds acting. Even though the movie is still surrounded by crime we witness him in more of a comedy roll. In addition, some people may be familiar with Ed Skrein within the movie due to the fact that he MC’s at music festivals. Ed has performed with Plan B as well who is the director of the Movie. Ill Manors was the first movie where audience members witness Ed’s potential in acting. Furthermore, he has pursued his career in acting by joining the cast of ‘Game of Thrones’ in 2013.

The main characters are Riz Ahmed and Ed Skrien in my opinion played fairly well. However, there are many more actors that can play the exact same roll for instance, Adam Deacon, Noel Clarke, Kano and Ashley Walters. Therefore, as a whole I believe the acting didn’t stand out as much as it could of for the main characters. However, Natalie Press who plays Katya the Russian mum played her role extremely good including Anouska Mond who played a prostitute addicted to drugs. These two actors stood out for me the most due to the fact that you felt more in tune with them. For instance, in one scene we witness Katya beaten up by her husband or boyfriend. During that scene we as the audience feel her pain as she’s just recently had her baby however, isn’t resting but is on the run from the Russian gangsters as she doesn’t want to raise her baby in a environment surrounded by drugs and prostitution. In addition, we again feel slightly sickened when we witness Michelle who plays the prostitute go from shop to shop to have sexual intercourse with the shop keepers in order to pay back Ed. The fact that she is forced against her will gives a more sinister feeling.

The genre of ill manors is crime, drama/thriller, the over lapping of three different genres does fit the films story and purpose. The film is more about struggles in run down areas as such shown. Overall the mood conveyed in the movie is fairly depressing as it made me think after the movie about how living in a place like that would be like and the hardships that may come with it. In addition, it gives a dull, moody atmosphere as well.

Overall the sound track used in the movie did fit its purpose for instance, during the movie towards the start there would be a minor sound track rapping out a characters background and current life story up until now. As first it didn’t ‘understand it much but not until later it did fit the purpose. I did like that however, equally dislike it as it was like they threw the whole background story. Personally I believe if they didn’t add it for some characters we could of pieced together their story. But it worked extremely well with the background story Katya. As we witness what her life was like before we was on the run from the Russian gangsters, therefore, we as the audience could sympathise with her more.

Ill Manors is aimed at the audience of 16 – 35 years of age predominately a male target audience. We can establish this as violence, drugs and foul language is commonly associated with more of a male target audience therefore, it may appeal to them more. However, it still may appeal to females as well. I would recommend it to people that are interested in UK crime dramas similar to Adulthood etc. However, there are too many movies alike therefore, it will be a double minded situation but I will still suggest to an individual.
