Exam Questions

2.) How is gender/ethnicity/ age represented in the music video?

During the duration of the clip we witness a large numbers of teenagers/adults causing mayhem. We prominently see males in the video and less females. This indicates that males are more dominate and violent compared to women therefore, living up to the stereotype normally presented within the media.  Furthermore, there are predominantly black males within the music video which is again stereotypical of the media to represent. They represent black males to be apart of crime and extremely violent, not obeying the law however, creating their own and following the pathway they find the easiest to get into.  In addition, we also witness more younger teens in the video suggesting that teens follow the pathway of crime at a young age especially those who live at council estates. Furthermore, we also witness a few adults within the video. Therefore, suggesting the teens at the council estates look up to them and want to follow the path that they haven taken. This also links with the hypodermic theory where consumers are injected with the image of Teens being violent. This allows the audience to be powerless due to the fact they are being injected with the image of teens acting in a certain way and contributing to it.

3.)  Media Institutions: In what ways is the video typical of music videos and what values does it promote?

The music video is presented as a montage. It has clips from the riots it's self and clips that were filmed. By having genuine clips from the riots it gives a sense of authenticity and realism. The values it promotes is violence and anger. With out listening to the lyrics deeply most viewers will believe this song is made purely to back up the actions that teens and adults had taken out on the day of the 2011 London riots. However, the deeper meaning of the actual lyric is saying something else how 'Chavs' are neglected in society and not given enough support. We witness fast cuts and a fast pace of editing which contributes to the music video  being violent and loud. This enforces the image and characteristics of a council estate predominantly shown.

4.) Media Audiences: Who does this text/artist appeal to and why?

I belief that the music video generally appeals to teenagers however, the deep lyrical meaning is for everyone to listen to. As mentioned before the video predominantly appeals to teenagers however, it also gives a message to those in authority. We witness Plan B to be a voice for the voiceless, in this case a voice for those who are labelled as chavs. In the behind the scenes for the making of ill manors one of the characters ED talked about how the movie overall is for two sets of audiences. One of whom didn't riot and the other who did riot during summer 2011. In this case we are able to establish this is the case too. Plan B has directly addressed authority due to the fact that he finds it that they are out classing those living on council estates and not allowing them to be a part of society. Generally the artist appeals to more teenagers as they see him talking 'truth' during some of the tracks he has made over the past few years. The duration of the video clip is more targeted towards a demographic group of D. This will appeal to them as it links with council estate semi skilled/ unskilled workers and a demographic set of E which are unemployed and students which links largely with his gathering.
